  1. Root has to be the best English cricketer of the twentieth century who was never a Cricketer of the Year.

    The way he starred in a dreadful Worcestershire team that won only twenty games and lost 109 between 1923 and 1929 is the most extreme case of a “one-man team” in sport. He would have been as certain as can be to have been a Cricketer of the Year in 1926, as I intend to discuss on my blog, but a special portrait of Jack Hobbs meant there were no ordinary Cricketers of the Year.

    England erred badly not taking him to Australia in 1924/1925: Fred Root was very much the sort of bowler who would have done well on the cast-iron Australian wickets of the 1920s, and with Tate having the support he needed they might have won two or three close Tests that were lost.
